The United States notched another dominant win over Switzerland in quarterfinal, 4-0, continuing their undefeated string of games in the tournament. The Americans are trying to become the IIHF U-18 contest’s first repeat winners since the USA themselves did it in 2014 and 2015.
Tournament scoring leader James Hagens racked up two more goals and added an assist in the win over Swizerland. He is just two points shy of Nikita Kucherov’s single-tournament record of 21 points in 2011. Captain Brodie Ziemer added a goal and an assist of his own, and Nicholas Kempf held back 17 shots from the Swiss as the USA piled 35 on their opponents.
While the competition will only get more fierce from here, the United States may be breathing a bit easier against their upcoming opponent, Slovakia. The Americans handed them a demoralizing 9-0 shutout to open the preliminary round earlier in the tournament. Slovakia beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in the quarterfinal to advance, but only clawed its way into the knockout round with a 1-0-0-3 record.
