Medical marijuana dispensaries have opened for the first time in Iowa on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
Five medical cannabidiol or CBD dispensaries have opened for business in Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Windsor Heights, Waterloo and Davenport.
MedPharma Iowa, Iowa's only medical cannabidiol manufacturer, will manufacture all of the state's legal marijuana products at its manufacturing facility in Des Moines.
MedPharm Iowa has also been awarded the licenses to operate the dispensaries in Sioux City and Windsor Heights.
These five dispensaries will offer three forms of medical CBD - gel capsules, tincture and cream - to Iowans with a valid patient or caregiver registration card.
In order to purchase medical CBD, Iowans must have a qualifying condition or be an approved caregiver for a patient with a qualifying condition, and have a registration card. According to the Iowa Department of Public health, 600 Iowans have qualified for a medical marijuana card.
Iowans with the following qualifying conditions may be eligible for a medical CBD patient registration card : cancer, seizures, Crohn's disease, untreatable pain, multiple sclerosis with severe and persistent muscle spasms, AIDS or HIV, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, Parkinson's disease, or any terminal illness with a probable life expectancy of under one year.
The 2017 Medical Cannabidiol Act allows the use of medical cannabis oil that can only have a tetrahydrocannabinol or THC content of up to 3 percent. THC is the compound in marijuana that causes a high. Recreational cannabis is illegal in the state.
