Port Moresby (Agenzia Fides) - "The leaders of the world and those of Papua New Guinea must develop policies, regulations and laws that reduce the levels of production of companies in order to limit the effects of climate change": this is the appeal launched by the youth of Papua, students of the St Charles Lwanga secondary school in Port Moresby, who participated in the program entitled "Climate change: the greatest threat in human history", in the "Chat Room" space on the broadcaster Tribe 92 FM, radio station dedicated and focused on young people in Papua New Guinea.
After a brief introduction, the students talked about the environmental, social and economic implications affecting developed and developing countries and focused on a re-elaboration of UN recommendations to reduce the effects of climate change.
"The populations in Oceania depend mainly on agriculture and fishing both for sustenance and as a source of income", underlined one of the participants, pointing out the devastating effects on some indigenous populations of the archipelagos of the Pacific Ocean.
During the debate, the young people invited the large multinational companies from all over the world to "contribute to improving the quality of life of humanity instead of trying to make more profit at the expense of the well-being and dignity of the human race". Bainam Bani, vice headmaster of the school, said he was impressed by the trust shown by his students in the discussions: "manufacturing companies must start using clean energy, more trees must be planted, we must start using recyclable materials", he pointed out.
