Verizon NEC2A Data Center Project
Colorado Springs
Award of Merit

Owner: Verizon Wireless
Lead Design Firm: Genesis Engineers Inc.
General Contractor: The Martin Group
Electrical: Weifield Group Contracting

Verizon Wireless is one of the largest telecommunications providers in the country. Even a blip of downtime from one of its IT servers could cost tens of thousands of dollars per second. The servers in Verizon’s 122,000-sq-ft data center in Colorado Springs also contain data for the city’s 911 Call Center and military clients, so ensuring continuous uptime was critical.

Weifield Group Contracting was charged with installing 12 new remote power panels in the data center, but when the equipment arrived, the panels were fitted with an external box instead of the internal trend point box as planned. It would’ve taken months to receive replacements, so the team quickly made the decision to install connection terminals for every panel, resulting in the addition of nearly 900 hours to the schedule.
