Germany’s ambassador to the UK has suggested that an independent Scotland would have to adopt the euro if it joined the EU in another blow to Nicola Sturgeon’s currency policy.

The first minister has repeatedly said that a new country under her leadership would become a member of the bloc without having to sign up to the single currency.

This was contradicted yesterday by Miguel Berger. The diplomat pointed out that the likes of Albania, Moldova, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia all knew they would have to adopt the euro when applying to join the union.

Pressed on Sky News’ Sophy Ridge On Sunday show, Berger said he did not “want to get into an internal question” about British politics.
